Next step collaboration Fieldlab Industrial Electrification and Plant One Rotterdam
On Wednesday 15 June, Plant One Rotterdam took a next step in the customer relationship with Fieldlab Industrial Electrification (FLIE) by means of financial support. The field lab works together with national and international partners to accelerate the implementation of industrial electrification in practice. The sponsorship by Plant One Rotterdam is an important next step in the collaboration that was started at the end of last year by establishing the Field Lab on the Plant One Rotterdam site. With this collaboration, both parties want to make a greater impact on accelerating the energy transition.
In February 2021, the FLIE started a Solution Center on the RDM campus in Rotterdam to advise companies on financing, regulations and supervising feasibility studies. From January 2022, the FLIE will be located on the Plant One Rotterdam site. This is where technologies can be tested on an industrially relevant scale in a real-world environment and brought to a higher TRL than at other locations. A pilot at the Fieldlab helps to understand how electricity can be used to make specific industrial processes more sustainable. This form of testing is interesting for industrial end users who want to implement new technologies, but also for technology providers who want to demonstrate their innovations.
Peter van Hooft (Deputy Director Fieldlab Industrial Electrification)
“The Network and the available knowledge complement each other perfectly.”
A good match
FLIE and Plant One Rotterdam are a very good match. Both parties share the same ambitions regarding the industrial energy and materials transition. “The network and the available knowledge complement each other perfectly. For example, Plant One provides the right infrastructure and facilities that are necessary for the realization of the pilot projects. They possess additional knowledge and experience for scaling up setups and have environmental permit for a wide range of innovations. Finally, the central location in the Port of Rotterdam & Industrial Cluster is a success factor.” Said Peter van Hooft, (Deputy Director).
“The collaboration goes much further than just making space and utilities available. We are very happy with the umbrella permit, but also with Plant One’s engineers, who are experienced in building setups. And the operators who will soon be operating the systems.” Gabriël Tschin (managing director of Plant One Rotterdam) adds: “The activities of FLIE are a nice addition to the topics we are already working on in practice. Think of circularity, sustainability or CO2 reduction. Together we can better put the theme of Electrification on the map. We are happy to use our expertise to achieve that goal.”
Flywheels, hybrid boilers and so much more
The FLIE will contain three types of technologies that fit the cluster and that can be demonstrated in practice. This involves techniques in the field of industrial heat, integration of green hydrogen and direct conversion of CO2, all of which use sustainable electricity. Think of a flywheel that can supply, collect and store energy. Or a hybrid boiler, which can replace steam from natural gas with steam from sustainable electricity. With a diverse range of electrification solutions, FLIE is the ideal location to find out what the right technology fit is for a company.
Together we can better put the theme of Electrification on the map. We are happy to use our expertise to achieve that goal.”Gabriël Tschin (managing director of Plant One Rotterdam)

Plant One Rotterdam B.V. is an independent innovation center that offers all facilities to companies and research institutions to demonstrate their innovative ideas for sustainable(more) technology in a safe environment on an industrial scale. This not only demonstrates technical but also commercial feasibility. Plant One Rotterdam has a unique overarching environmental permit (Wabo) in the Netherlands. Tenants can benefit from this because the permitting process per pilot only takes a few weeks instead of months or even years. Plant One Rotterdam distinguishes itself from other initiatives by its large-scale approach and the focus on a wide range of techniques. This is made possible by a qualified and experienced team that offers all possible technical, operational, logistical and administrative support that completely unburdens customers.
