New grant for circular innovations in Rotterdam
Rotterdam City Council is encouraging the transition to a circular economy through a subsidy scheme for innovations within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This scheme is aimed at entrepreneurs engaged in the more efficient use of raw materials and reducing waste streams. With this scheme, Rotterdam hopes not only to contribute to sustainability goals, but also to stimulate innovation and employment within the circular economy.
Who is the grant for?
The grant scheme is aimed at Rotterdam small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) focusing on circular innovation. These can be both start-ups and established companies that:
- Develop new products or services that contribute to a circular economy
- Making existing production processes more sustainable by using fewer raw materials or reducing waste streams
- Reusing materials or raw materials to reduce waste
Entrepreneurs who meet these criteria and have a concrete plan can apply for a financial contribution to further develop their innovation or test it in practice.

Award
The grant is intended for projects that demonstrably contribute to circular entrepreneurship and is awarded based on several criteria. These include:
- Impact on the circular economy - How does the project contribute to reducing resource use and waste generation?
- Scalability - Can the innovation be applied or replicated on a larger scale?
- Financial feasibility - Is there a clear and realistic financial plan?
- Technological elaboration - Is the project concrete and feasible within a reasonable timeframe?
To ensure that the grant is used effectively, the extent to which the project matches market needs and whether there is a revenue model that can grow the innovation in the long term is also assessed.
