FLIE Electrolyzer networking event
FLIE Electrolyzer networking event
Electrolyzer technologies are essential for the future energy supply and the electrification of industry. The Fieldlab Industrial Electrification (FLIE) works every day with innovative companies to accelerate the energy transition in the Netherlands. We do this by connecting technology suppliers and end users that want to reduce their CO2 footprint. As such, we boast a broad network of businesses and stakeholders that are active in the value chain for green hydrogen and other electrolyzer applications.
Catalyst coatings play a dominant role in electrolyzer costs and performance. For example, catalysts in PEM electrolyzers for the production of green hydrogen contain large amounts of iridium, a very scarce and expensive metal, which is a bottleneck in scaling up the production of green hydrogen. Because of this, it is essential to rethink supply chains and prepare for future material use by producing with fewer resources and less waste.
This year, FLIE contributed to a project by VSPARTICLE, SparkNano, DIFFER and TNO to optimize two novel methods to produce catalyst coatings. VSPARTICLE and SparkNano, two fast-growing scale-ups from the Netherlands, both developed equipment to produce catalyst coatings that highly reduce the use of scarce materials while also being more efficient and faster than conventional methods. The project focuses on catalyst coatings for both the production of green hydrogen and the conversion of CO2 into sustainable feedstock for the chemical industry, and the approaches can be applied to an even wider range of electrocatalysis applications.
